MDFR inspectors will also be on hand to talk about the dangers of using illegal fireworks for your backyard show. “We recommend that residents of Miami-Dade County go and see a professional show,” said Fire Chief William W. Bryson. “Even a sparkler that looks harmless can be a hazard if used improperly.”

According to a report released by the National Fire Protection Association in 2012, each year more than 8,000 fireworks-related injuries are treated in emergency rooms across the United States.  Children under the age of 15 account for nearly 40 percent of those injured.  The risk of fireworks injury is two-and-a-half times higher for children ages 5-14 as compared to the general population. Sparklers, fountains and novelties alone accounted for 43 percent of emergency room fireworks injuries in 2011. These incidents highlight the dangers many children face when exposed to illegal fireworks, or when they handle legal fireworks without proper instruction or supervision.
